Who was at fault, Max Verstappen or Lance Stroll? #PortugueseGP
There were 22 minutes left in the FP2 practise session in Portugal . It was a pretty normal session, with a couple spins and lock ups. This was until the camera cut to Lance Stroll and Max Verstappen racing down towards the first corner.
Any F1 fan would know that this would end up with an undesirable result for either one of them! And surprise they collided!!
So, here is my take on it!!
Lance Stroll was on his fast lap and Max Verstappen happened to be in front of him and it was thus his duty to let him by. Max now assumes that it's his turn to start his fast lap. It was of course not known to him that Lance was not gonna give it another go.
The reason that I am aggravated at what Otmar Szafnauer said is because
Just because everyone at Racing point knows that Lance is going on 2 consecutive fast laps does not mean that the whole paddock does!! And also Max is not randomly gonna assume that he is going on two consecutive fast laps. The fact is that Max let him past because that is a part of the gentlemanly agreement and a part of his duties as a racing driver. And it's now Lance's turn to do the same, it does not matter if Lance is planning to go full throttle for two laps, you can always leave more space or at least be aware of what is happening around you. Thus if you let your ego, irresponsibility get in your way you are gonna ruin your own session, no one else's.
And if you're gonna say that Lance did not see Max think about it twice before you decide to disagree with two racing drivers!! Who has enough experience to know if Lance Stroll would have seen Max or not. If you watch the footage back you can literally see that Lance turned his head to see Max and that there is no way you cannot see an F1 car right beside you.
I do agree that it's both Max’s and Lance Stroll's fault!! But it's time for the Otmar Szafnauer to have a proper debate like Christian Horner and Toto Wolff, and not just jump into the conversation just to protect your driver and say “He did not see him”. Or he could have at least admitted that it was both the drivers fault. Even Christian Horner did!! And this is the man that most people called egoistic and two faced. So, take from that what you will.
Just keep in mind that Otmar Szafnauer is the same guy who took a dig at Zak Brown for only having knowledge about historic racing. At Least Zac Brown can protect his drivers from his “historic racing” knowledge.
So here's the conclusion:
1)Stroll and Max both knew that each other were there
2)Stroll should have given Max more space
3)Both were being destructive, and as a result Stroll ruined his own session
4)People need to stop blaming Max Verstappen and need to accept that it's both the driver's faultand not just one of theirs.
